Remote Control Human – RCH 201: Välitetty kosketus

2018

“Elements of virtual reality are turned back into reality. The digital becomes flesh, and the spectator becomes a participant. I have a feeling that something truly unique is being created here.”
Lukupino blog

Remote Control Human was a participatory performance and installation that took place on October 8, 2018, in the spaces of Riihimäki Theatre and Scandic Hotel Riihimäki. Audience members could take part in various roles – as observers, performers, or as someone else's avatar – and parts of the event were also streamed live via Facebook. The piece opened doors to both private and shared spaces, exploring questions of power, embodiment, and remote control through the intersection of live performance and technology.

#digiteatteri brought Outi Condit's concept — which investigates the limits and potential of the performing body within techno-mediated structures of power — into the realm of experiential performance. In the work, the viewer’s body and experience were placed at the center of performative inquiry. Hotel rooms and lobby areas became performative zones where touch, control, and vulnerability intertwined. The work was built around embodied experience, queer distortion, and the sensation of shared or distributed identity.

In virtual reality, anything is possible. Through digital technology, we can meet anonymously, cross boundaries, multiply, and reinvent ourselves.

But what happens when these virtual performances are brought back into the analogue world, and the fleshless bodies of techno-networks are turned back into flesh?
