queerAI - One on One
2020
The first phase of Queer AI took the form of a participatory interview performance. A small group of invited guests joined us in an intimate setting to help lay the foundations for a queer artificial intelligence.
The event was not open to the public. Instead, we created a conversational space where invited participants were warmly placed at the center. Together, we talked about life, identity, technology, gender, and sexual orientation. These conversations shaped an interactive and affective terrain where the act of speaking became a way of designing a system—an AI—grounded in lived, queer experience.
The people in the photographs are members of the working group.
Some excerpts from the interviews:
#digiteatteri
Pirated software
opened up a whole different world—
queer-themed,
against the hetero mainstream,
alternative.
Movies, TV shows, bands, entertainment—
they answered a kind of hunger,
like: damn, this is real.
This exists.
This is being made.
These people exist.

If those alternatives exist,
then you can either write your own version
or choose from many others—
so that
you’ll find something
that fits you.
Everyone is on the same line—
there’s no normative default with others as exceptions.
The starting point should be that
everyone is on equal footing
and equally normal.
